Even the changes to healing in Black Ops 4 dramatically changed that game's sandbox. Spec Ops was an optional third mode that started in Modern Warfare 2 and was also included in Modern Warfare 3 and the rebooted Modern Warfare. These missions are bite-sized encounters that reward speed and accuracy. Missions ranged from replaying segments of the campaign to playing levels from the enemy's perspective. It was a great change of pace for the series and allowed for some fun co-op moments.
Most also forget about Modern Warfare 3's Survival Mode, a Spec Ops variant that tasked players with surviving against waves of enemies.
Admittedly, the Spec Ops variant in the reboot is rather lackluster, but Spec Ops is a core part of the MW formula that many enjoy. One of Modern Warfare's largest weaknesses is that it's stuck in the modern-day setting. Black Ops has the ability to create games in any setting they wish, something Treyarch has used to great effect.
Vietnam and the Cold War were the centerpieces for the first Black Ops. Each game since has pushed the near-future setting with Black Ops 2's focus on drones, Black Ops 3 's take on transhumanism through technology, and Black Ops 4's prequel approach to the third entry. No game in the Black Ops series overlaps to the degree the Modern Warfare games do. Infiltrating missile silos, defending the White House, and clearing apartment buildings in the dead of night are what Modern Warfare's campaigns are all about.
These campaigns are grounded just enough in reality to get fans invested in the story, but the Call of Duty games never pretend they're anything more than games either. Rushing through urban environments while taking out dozens of troops is a great distraction from the multiplayer offering. Campaigns that Treyarch made are solid as well, but the third game is just a confusing mess.
Black Ops 4 doesn't even have a campaign to begin with. It is hard to pick which series has the best maps ; Modern Warfare has classics such as Rust, Terminal, Dome, and Vacant. Black Ops also provided some fan-favorites. Most of these maps have a perfect balance between lane-control and vantage points through buildings.
Most maps in Modern Warfare 3 and the reboot aren't as fleshed out as the maps in Black Ops 2 and arguably Black Ops 3. It appears that all unlocks are based solely on time played rather than XP earned, in-game score, or challenges. Treyarch desperately needs to fix this system, as it not only rewards AFK players, it just isn't very gratifying at all. And it should be. There will also be a cash shop at some point where you can spend real money to buy Call of Duty points and spend those points on cosmetics.
It appears these will all be items that refresh weekly, though it's possible an RNG loot-box system could also be included. It gets you some new Blackout characters, some Call of Duty points, 12 new maps instead of 16, which is too bad and more Zombies content.
I maintain that Activision needs to adapt and come up with a better monetization strategy here, as selling map packs only weakens the game and its community over time.
But really, this is par for the course when it comes to Call of Duty. All told, I'm very happy with Black Ops 4 and with Treyarch's commitment to making it the best game it can be over the long haul. I hope we see continued support for all these modes and fixes to things like the Contraband Stream.
Other things, like the excellent Mercenary playlist which pits solo players against one another so you never have to play against five-player teams make the game more accessible and fun for solo players like me. Finally, I played the game on both PS4 purchased a copy and PC a copy was provided for review and while both versions are great, the PC version suffers yet again from rampant cheating. It is very frustrating to have entire matches ruined by aimbots. This applies to Blackout as well.
It's a shame this is still such a problem as I really was hoping Battle. If you're only here for the campaign, there's no reason for you to buy Black Ops 4. But if you're a multiplayer gamer and enjoy battle royale games, there's plenty of great, addictive content to keep you playing for months on end. It's definitely worth your time if you're a shooter fan.
The Good: Excellent gunplay that makes for some of the most intense shooter action I've played in recent years; plenty of multiplayer maps; a fun new battle royale mode to spice things up. The Bad: Some launch issues like lousy spawns; long loading times between matches in Blackout; a terrible progression system that ought to be much better. The Ugly: No single-player campaign. Cheaters on PC ruining the experience with aimbots.

Both Black Ops 4 and Modern Warfare offer players unique characters to play as in multiplayer. Their functionality, however, is completely different. Specialists in Black Ops 4 are hero units. Each Specialist has their own piece of equipment they can use and a Special Ability.
Matches can change drastically depending on the Specialists in play at any given time. For example, Recon can highlight and tag enemies on the map, which makes him perfect for game modes like Search and Destroy. Since Black Ops II, all Call of Duty games have utilized Scorestreaks that build up as players earn score through playing the objective or racking up kills.
Black Ops 4 utilizes Scorestreaks. Modern Warfare returns the franchise back to its roots with Killstreaks where only kills count towards rewards.
Scorestreaks ultimately replaced Killstreaks to get players to work as a team and play the objective. Whether that worked or not remains questionable, but it was at least nice knowing that you could rack up score towards a Scorestreak by playing the game. Both Black Ops 4 and Modern Warfare offer their take on big game modes. Here, up to players can engage with each other in open conflict.
Black Ops 4 shipped with a Battle Royale mode called Blackout. It was a rather intense mode that placed an emphasis on tactical play. With only one life, players had to be careful or else risk elimination.
The giant map was populated with famous Black Ops locales. Up to players converge on three maps specifically created for Ground War in a tug-of-war over control points. Like with the big game modes, the co-op offerings in Black Ops 4 and Modern Warfare are vastly different. Black Ops 4 saw the return of classic Zombies, a mode that Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have tried to incorporate into their previous games.
Still, Treyarch proved once again with Black Ops 4 that no one makes Zombies like they can. Zombies launched with three maps available for all players, and a fourth for owners of the Black Ops Pass.
