In , two years after the left field Wall was constructed in its present dimensions, a foot-high screen was added over the top to protect the windows of buildings across the street. The only way to retrieve balls that were hit into the screen was to climb a ladder that extended up the face of the Wall.
Every day after batting practice, a worker would place a removable ladder at the base of the Wall, then ascend the Green Monster ladder to fetch any balls that had landed there.
When seats were added atop the Green Monster for the season, the screen was removed and the ladder was no longer needed, but it remains in place today. The ladder is in fair territory, and can cause some interesting bounces, as Dick Stuart once found out.
The notoriously slow-footed first baseman hit a ball off the ladder in , and it bounced far enough away from the fielders that he was able to leg out an inside-the-park home run. Boucher's straw hat.
As Boucher later recalled, "They say it bounced a dozen rows higher, but after it hit my head, I was no longer interested. Located in left field, the 37 foot high wall was originally covered in advertisements with a hand operated scoreboard at the base. A tragic fire in January destroyed most of the construction but the ballpark was complete and free of damage when it reopened on April 17, In , a 23 foot net was placed on the left field wall to prevent baseballs from breaking windows in nearby shops.
Prior to the start of the season, the right field wall was moved in 20 feet shortening the outfield fence from to feet in right field and to feet in right-center field. Bullpens for the Red Sox and the visiting team were placed in the area created between the stands and the outfield wall, replacing the original ones in foul territory.
A small upper deck was added to the ballpark in slightly increasing the seating capacity. For almost three decades there were few changes at Fenway Park. In the early s 44 luxury boxes were added at the ballpark, down the first and third base lines. Additional seating was also placed along the right-field roof, creating a small upper deck of several rows.
