Most graphic design jobs can be evaluated along these 3 lines:. A print project will be physically printed on some sort of media e. Digital projects will be viewed on a screen e. Image projects involve visual elements like photos, illustrations, shapes and patterns. Often, projects will use both. A vector project is an image built with lines and curves that can be enlarged or shrunk-down to any size e.
A raster project is an image built out of a set number of pixels that will change in quality when resized e. So, pick an app, any app. Yup, photos. The app was originally designed as a comprehensive solution for creating, editing and retouching any type of raster image. Since then, Photoshop has evolved a full slate of tools that allow users to do so much more. Fine artists use it to draw, sketch and even paint digitally.
Photographers use it to adjust and transform their photos with color and lighting. Production designers use it to create web-ready digital images. When most people think of graphic design, they think Photoshop.
However, with InDesign you can customize each page while also creating a master view including page numbers, a logo, etc. The text wrap function in InDesign is far simpler than in Illustrator. Furthermore, layouts created in Illustrator tend to be needlessly large and fail in the commercial printer optimization category. Since each program is different and comes with its own strong points and deficits, choose your program based on your project. Program: Illustrator is your best choice because its vector-based visual elements are professional looking and can be altered, manipulated, and resized.
Program: Photoshop is your best choice for this with its library of special effects and filters. Program: InDesign and its word wrap feature are your best bet for large sections of text free of pixelation.
InDesign is your backup choice. Program: InDesign is your best bet, because it offers you multi-page templates and layouts for print. Color selection is very easy with vector files, as you simply choose the shape and choose your color from your swatch library or color selector.
So what are the downsides to vector files? Not only is it very time-consuming, but the file will quickly become complex, making the file size large and less manageable to work with. It is possible to combine raster files with vector files, but I urge you to be very cautious.
Doing this means your file is no longer truly vector. If you try to enlarge your graphic you will run into the same issues as you would with enlarging a raster file. Illustrator allows you to view your vector file in outline mode, meaning it shows the edge of every shape in your file. Think of a vector file as if you have a sheet of white vinyl and an X-acto knife. You can only make hard edge cuts.
There is no blending them. This is perfect if you intend to use your art for things such as screen printing or a cut vinyl sticker for example. If attempting to create a photorealistic graphic, you will end up with many more shapes and points making for a very large file that will not be so easy to manage. The plotter is going to cut on your path lines. If your lines are not connected, the plotter will not cut through.
Well, all of a sudden the boss wants to order embroidered shirts with this beautifully blended logo. You will now need to create a simplified version that consists of only flat colors.
Another thing to keep in mind, is that the more solid colors you have, the more thread colors, and the more expensive your logo will be to embroider.
